How to Make Your Calling and Election Sure
The Ten Virgins
Beloved,
The Lord left us a parable meant to be an ensample for us today — the parable of the ten virgins. Five were wise and entered in with the bridegroom to the marriage; five were foolish and found the door shut. Christ closes the parable with a command: "Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh." Today we learn what the lamp represents, how we ought to walk to keep our hands clean, and the very things every one of us can do to be among the five wise virgins — and thereby make our calling and election sure.
📜 The Parable of the Ten Virgins
📖 Matthew 25:1-13 (KJV)
"Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. And five of them were wise, and five were foolish. They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him. Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out. But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves. And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut. Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us. But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not. Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh."
Five had oil and went in to the marriage; five had no oil and the door was shut. The Lord's warning is plain: the difference was the oil — and the oil was something each virgin was personally responsible to have.
📖 What the Lamp Represents

"Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path."
📖 Colossians 3:16 (KJV)
"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord."
The lamp is the word of God: "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path" (Psalm 119:105). Each virgin carried a lamp — and a lamp is meant to give light. So the wise carried the word of God filled and abiding — "let the word of Christ dwell in you richly" (Colossians 3:16). Let the word of God dwell in you richly, and your lamp will not go out.

"Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints."

"For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ."

"He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him."
The ten virgins went forth to meet the bridegroom — and Scripture reveals that the bridegroom is the Lamb, the Lord Jesus Christ. "The marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready" (Revelation 19:7-8). To marry the Lamb is to be espoused to one husband, presented as a chaste virgin to Christ (2 Corinthians 11:2). How we show the Lamb we love Him: not by words only, but by keeping His commandments — "He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me" (John 14:21). The five wise virgins are those who have made themselves ready for the marriage of the Lamb.

📖 2 Peter 1:5-11 (KJV)
"And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall: For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ."
📖 1 Peter 1:15-16 (KJV)
"But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy."
Peter tells us exactly how: add to your faith virtue; to virtue knowledge; to knowledge temperance; to temperance patience; to patience godliness; to godliness brotherly kindness; to brotherly kindness charity. If these things be in you, and abound, then — "give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall" (2 Peter 1:10), and an entrance ministered abundantly into the everlasting kingdom (2 Peter 1:11). Be ye holy, for I am holy (1 Peter 1:16).

Every one of us can be among the five wise. Watch and pray (Matthew 26:41), confess your sins and be cleansed (1 John 1:9), keep the commandments of God (Exodus 20), be filled with the Spirit and let His word dwell in you richly — that your lamp never lack oil — and endure unto the end (Matthew 24:13). So doing, you will not be found empty at the midnight cry, but ready — and the door will not be shut against you.

The wise virgin keeps the commandments of God and holds the testimony of Christ. Every commandment kept is oil added to the lamp; every commandment broken is oil spilled out. Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
📌 Keep The Sabbath Holy
This Sabbath, take heed to the Lord's ensample: be a wise virgin. Carry the word as your lamp and the oil of the Holy Spirit in your vessel. Walk with clean hands and a pure heart; add to your faith virtue, knowledge, temperance, patience, godliness, brotherly kindness, and charity; keep the ten commandments (Exodus 20); and endure unto the end. So doing you shall make your calling and election sure — and when the bridegroom cometh, the door shall not be shut against you.
